Alcohol versus marijuana?

Category: Let's talk

Post 1 by Maiden of the Moonlight (Zone BBS is my Life) on Sunday, 23-Mar-2014 22:21:36

So one of those issues we hear a lot about these days is the debate of which is more harmful, alcohol or marijuana. I found this article comparing harms from both, and, although it's definitely biased toward marijuana, I enjoyed reading it. http://archive.saferchoice.org/content/view/24/53/

If you get a chance, check it out, but even if you don't feel like clicking the link, I wanna hear your opinions. It's probably pretty obvious what mine is. :P

I haven't tried pot and I'm not really curious or interested in it. I've seen what it does and feel like I'm all ready chill enough as I am. Alcohol brings the fun side out of me and has occasionally screwed up my budget, but I'll have a drink when the time's right.

Post 3 by BryanP22 (Novice theriminist) on Monday, 24-Mar-2014 3:24:50

Pot smells like fried dirty socks to me. And I've seen firsthand the harm alcohol can cause since both my ather and sister have struggled with that particular demon.

Post 4 by forereel (Just posting.) on Monday, 24-Mar-2014 18:05:14

Not all pot smells like dirty socks. Now that is is legal, and even when it wasn't, there were strains that smelled sweet. Nice actually
It is hard to say if one is better or worse, because that depend on the users habits, and body. I guess anything used in moderation is just about as harmful as walking on the street. Abuse it, and it is going to be bad.
But even that is subjective, because some people seem to have 9 lives. They abuse everything and live to be 90, so.
Enjoy your poison, but mildly..

Post 5 by Imprecator (The Zone's Spelling Nazi) on Monday, 24-Mar-2014 19:43:46

Never smoked sweet leaf and I never wwill, but I wanna try it in a vaporizer. As for alcohol, beer and wine make me mellow, vodka and whiskey make me extremely depressed and angry, so, beer and wine it is.

I've never tried pot, but I am really curious and willing to try. I love drinking
socially, and I can say that alcohol get the relaxed, fun and wild side of me at
times. It depends on how much I drink. Yes I can do without alcohol and no
you'll not see me in AA meetings, lol! But I love wine, beer and shots. I can't
wait to try hard licor and cocktail mixes, though I love margaritas. I think
Wayne is right, if you abuse it there'll be consequences, yet there are people
who drink and smoke and live a long time. I guess it doesn't hurt to try and
enjoy certain things like pot and alcohol in moderation. I certainly will, that way
I can't say that Oh, she or he said it's bad so I shouldn't have it. I don't think
that's the way to go either.

Post 8 by Westcoastcdngrl (move over school!) on Tuesday, 25-Mar-2014 4:00:46

Smoke it if you've got it... that said, I have never smoked it myself and
likely never will... I've had pot brownies before ( they made me sleepy ),
but I just don't see what the big deal is about a little bit of B C bud... if
others want to smoke it, that's fine by me... I'm just not interested.

Alcohol, on the other hand... YES PLEASE! * smile * I think that I'm
genetically predisposed to drinking and in the two years I've been living in
the U K, my liver has built up quite a tolerance for liquor, the likes of which
haven't been seen since I was a young 20-something who used to drink
until she puked and ended up going to bed with a massive headache and a
fairly sizeable hangover... this compelled me to tone down the hooch in my
late twenties and early thirties.

Post 9 by Nicky (And I aprove this message.) on Tuesday, 25-Mar-2014 6:39:30

I like to drink a small bit of wine but not a lot. Just about a glass or less. At a time
I don't like pot though. Not at all. I can't stand the smell.
but if others want to smoke it, that's fine by me... I'm just not interested.
I also don't want to smell it in my home. I will not date or marry someone who smoke it or sigaretts either. I don't like the smells or the smokes. I have alergies to the smoke and my skin brakes out and I will get sick. I am not making this up either. I grew up in a house where a person who smoked and I was always ill and my skin was always dry and rashy looking. Once I moved out on my own, everything cleared up. Then I moved in with room mates who smoke and they try to smoke inside sometimes and I start to brake out all over again. I did it even with the pot smoke too. So not sure what it is but I don't like it.

Pot makes people mellow, as does booze of course, but the next day there is no headache. Haven't done it since college. But now there are ways to do without smoking it or making it into brownies. Of course, I did used to make a pretty mean spaghetti sauce with it.

Post 11 by chelslicious (like it or not, I'm gonna say what I mean. all the time.) on Tuesday, 25-Mar-2014 15:27:39

I don't drink enough to say I'm even a rare drinker, and I've never smoked pot. however, I'm of the opinion that anything in moderation is fine.

Post 12 by Daenerys Targaryen (Enjoying Life) on Tuesday, 25-Mar-2014 15:47:24

I rather have pot than alcohol but I do like drinking wine and drinks like Pina Coladas and Long Island Ice Teas.

Post 13 by Brooke (I just keep on posting!) on Wednesday, 26-Mar-2014 12:50:38

I've smoked pot in the past, but it's not something I'm interested in doing again. I'll drink occasionally, and alcohol usually causes me to be more outgoing, wanting to laugh and have fun. I think either is okay in moderation, but they can obviously both become problems when abused.

Post 14 by Ed_G (Zone BBS is my Life) on Wednesday, 26-Mar-2014 13:15:56

I would say that, if consumed to excess, alcohol is more impairing, mind-
affecting and behaviour-altering than pot is. I suspect the reason that alcohol is
less restricted than other drugs is as much if not more to do with its widespread
consumption and social acceptance than in western societies built up over
millennia as it is to do with the relative harm caused.

Post 15 by daigonite (the Zone BBS remains forever my home page) on Wednesday, 26-Mar-2014 13:21:10

I don't like alcohol because it makes me feel loose and out of control.
Marijuana just makes me think everything is awesome. Legalize, please.

Post 16 by blbobby (Ooo you're gona like this!) on Wednesday, 26-Mar-2014 14:39:32

I smoked pot back in the 60s--a lot of it. I tried it again about five years ago, and could hardly wait to come down. I swear it's changed, or I have. Anyway, I'll not do it again.

As for booze, I had some real problems after the deaths of my parents. Now I drink socially but don't keep it at home.

I think booze is much more harmful. Just my opinion.

Did you say, Pot Spaghetti Sauce??? Now that would be interesting.
I think if it were legal and all the closet smokers came out, so to speak, people would be surprised at who all smokes the wacky tabacky.

Post 21 by forereel (Just posting.) on Friday, 28-Mar-2014 0:27:05

Move to Colorado. It is legal.
I think the smoking population stayed the same though. I really expected to smell it more often on the street and such, but nothing has changed except the girl Scouts are getting richer.

Post 22 by GreenTurtle (Music is life. Love. Vitality.) on Friday, 28-Mar-2014 23:48:22

Lol, my friend was telling me about that Girl Scout situation, and ranting and raving about it as if it were the worst thing in the world. I just sort of rolled my eyes at him, because I thought he was being ridiculous.
Anyway, I'm another one who's never tried pot, but I don't have anything against it. Given the right opportunity and setting, I probably would do it. I'm a social drinker, and I think that, as long as you don't get too out of control with it, it's fine. I think, as others have said, moderation is the key.

Post 23 by Jack Off Jill (why the hell am I posting in the first place?) on Saturday, 29-Mar-2014 0:03:26

Honestly, I've seen how tons of pot in one system makes the person crazy. But most times pot isn't gonna make you crazy, its just stupid people wanting to act stupid.
I love to drink, when I started doing that, I found the thrill in it. I don't drink all the time, but honestly, I don't see pot harmful.

Post 24 by GreenTurtle (Music is life. Love. Vitality.) on Saturday, 29-Mar-2014 0:29:24

Well, it really depends on who you ask about pot. I have a friend who consumed one too many pot brownies, and told me that they knocked him out for over 12 hours, but before then, he had hallucinations. And my sister's boyfriend says that pot makes him extremely paranoid. I think that, whatever drugs you decide to take, the effect they have is very dependent on the person's state of mind, but, more importantly, their psychological makeup in general. I've heard that people who are prone to depression or any other mental illness should stay away from drugs, but especially alcohol. Well, speaking as a person who has depression, and has quite a bit of experience with alcohol, I can say that, for me at least, environment has everything to do with it. If I drink alone, the alcohol will amplify any bad feelings I have. But if I drink with others, it has a more positive effect on me, namely making me more outgoing, when I'm usually very introverted.
All in all, I think that some people simply can't have any kind of mood-altering substance in their system, it's just how their genetic makeup or personality is. Responsibility is a factor, but one shouldn't ever condemn something totally without taking that into account.

Post 25 by forereel (Just posting.) on Saturday, 29-Mar-2014 0:30:09

I have a serious belief. What is in you is already there, you just need an excuse for acting on it.
So, if you drink and act stupid, you were already. Same with smoke.
If you are mellow and fun, you will still be, just more so.

Post 28 by blbobby (Ooo you're gona like this!) on Saturday, 29-Mar-2014 12:14:43

I'm not so sure about the theory in post 25.
I don't think you take on personality traits you never had before, but I think booze (especially) bring out traits that are there, but are well hidden.
When I used to drink quite a bit there were certain whiskies that made me embarrassingly mean.
I don't know, maybe that bolsters post 25's theory instead of arguing against it.

any drug if used to much will have bad side effects. I have used alcohol and marijuana since my teens. you will definitely get yourself in to more trouble with alcohol if you over-indulge than if you use weed. I would definitely take the smoke over the drink if I had to choose, which I hope I never do. do 'em both together and have a good time. the buzz is great if you get the wee to alcohol ratio right

Post 34 by Leafs Fan (I'll have the last word, thank you!) on Wednesday, 21-May-2014 10:35:54

I drink a good amount socially. I like to drink socially, sometimes in higher quantities than I should. I have had pot cookies that basically put me to sleep. I have smoked on occasion and it felt very different from the brownies, a lot better actually. I don't smoke often enough to have much opinion on it, but I don't have anything against it.

Post 35 by LeoGuardian (You mean there is something outside of this room with my computer in it?) on Wednesday, 21-May-2014 11:06:00

Ingestion like in cookies is going to change how the THC works.
If you don't want to smoke, use a vaporizer.
That's basically inhaling pot-laden steam.
But yes, ingestion in food just isn't the same, even if I did at one time make a rather mean pot spaghetti sauce. The reason that was more successful than most pot brownies has, again, to do with the THC. When you use grass in something like a spaghetti sauce that you cook in a crock pot, the temperatures never are above 212 degrees, and often for most of the time less than that.
Compare that to your oven at 350 or 400 degrees with pot brownies.
Again, vaporizer is definitely as good as a smoke though.

I forgot about posting this! Very interesting responses. I'm a fan of both, but would choose the green over liquor any day too. Together they can be fun too, but I tend to black out easier if I mix. I think the key is to smoke first, then drink. If I do that, I find I'm way more in control. Smoking is great for just chilling out and listening to music, or debating about society. Alcohol is great for dancing and hanging out with larger groups. Alcohol has gotten me into a lot more trouble than weed, since weed really hasn't gotten me into any trouble at all. I don't get why it's not legal yet. Blah. I don't deny that all substances can be harmful, but comparably, alcohol can be just as bad, if not worse. I tend to think much worse, but that's just me.

But I agree with the last post, and you can make one wicked and far-out spaghetti sauce with it.
